STRUCTURE OF THE 2104 GPhC EXAMINATION

Closed Book:  (am) duration 1.5 hours 90 questions (1 minute / question )

Hints for closed book:   be familiar with the scope and contents of the layout of the current syllabus.

Recent amendments include working knowledge  e.g. veterinary medicines, poisons regulations,drug tariff, GPhC standards of conduct, ethics and performance. (MEP).

Open Book: (pm) duration 2.5hours.  It is recommended to divide your time as noted below:

80 questions ( 1 - 1.5 minutes /question.) includes 20 calculation style questions.

(Recommended time to complete calculation paper is one hour ( 3 minutes /question)

To achieve 70% - a minimum 14 correct answers.

Amendments include:

  1. BNF for children. This inclusion is because at least 20% of rx are for children.
  2. It is more patient focused and questions are senario–based (as opposed to factual). 
  3. Virtually all questions will be clinically based.

The examination format is comprised of one of four types of multiple choice style questions:

Simple Completion -

One question followed by five possible answers. Select one answer which is appropriate.

Multiple Completion -
Three options where one or more of which are correct. Select the response which fits the best option.

Classification -
Groups of  2 to 4 questions composed of three to five letter headings. Select the best letter which may be used more than once.

Assertion/Reason Type Question -

Questions consist of a statement in both the left and right hand column.  Decide whether the statements in both columns are true or false where the reason will tally with the right hand column statement.

Syllabus comprised of  three sections:

1. MEP (professional and legal practice) split into two parts:
  a) Code of Ethics
  b) Legal aspects of professional practice

2. Clinical and Pharmaceutical Practice

3. Systems and Procedures
